What is a routine tooth extraction?

A routine (or simple) tooth extraction is a dental procedure to remove a tooth that is visible in the mouth and can be removed without making a surgical incision. The dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic, loosen the tooth with a tool called an elevator, and then remove it with forceps.

Why might you need a routine tooth extraction?

A dentist may recommend an extraction for a variety of reasons, including:

Severe tooth decay or a deep infection that cannot be repaired with a filling or crown.

What is the recovery process like?

Biting down on a gauze pad to control bleeding.
